Ron Paul files for Presidential Bid

If you have read my blog in the past, you know that Congressman Ron Paul’s opinion is one that I hold highly. He is not very popular in his own Republican Party, because he doesn’t simply walk the party lines.  However, this has not impacted his ability to be reelected; as he has served in congress for nine terms.  I was quite pleased to see that he has filed papers to create a presidential exploratory committee for 2008.

Kent Synder, chairman of the exploratory committee says “There’s no question that it’s an uphill battle, and that Dr. Paul is an underdog, but we think it’s well worth doing and we’ll let the voters decide.” Paul describes himself “as a lifelong Libertarian running as a Republican.” What is a Libertarian you may ask?  Here are a couple of definitions.

lib·er·tar·i·an: One who advocates maximizing individual rights and minimizing the role of the state. — American Heritage Dictionary, Fourth Edition

Libertarianism is, as the name implies, the belief in liberty. Libertarians believe that each person owns his own life and property, and has the right to make his own choices as to how he lives his life — as long as he simply respects the same right of others to do the same. — Sharon Harris (>), President, Advocates for Self-Government.

Libertarianism. The belief that government should not interfere in the lives of citizens, other than to provide police and military protection. Libertarianism cannot easily be placed on the left-right scale that is usually used to analyze political philosophies. Libertarians are strong supporters of capitalism and free trade and yet also tolerant on social and lifestyle issues, which are considered none of the government’s business. The basic philosophy is “live and let live.” — iAmericanSpirit Political Dictionary

Paul bills himself as “The Taxpayers’ Best Friend,” and is routinely ranked either first or second in the House by the National Taxpayers Union, a national group advocating low taxes and limited government.  Someone who believes in small government and less taxes can’t be all bad.

Whether you agree with Paul’s politics or not – attaining Financial Freedom requires going against conventional thinking.  Ron Paul exemplifies that mind-set.
