Week in Review 4/6 – Market Up in Holiday Shortened Week

Volume was light all week as traders skipped out early for Easter, but the ones that were around held up the fort nicely:  DOW +1.7%, S&P500 +1.6%, NASDAQ +2.0%.  The Futures rallied on Friday with the release of a strong jobs report.  Hopefully, this carries over for a few days – that is until there is something else to worry about.

Commodites continued to shine lead by Copper +7.3%.  Precious Metals were respectable with Gold and Silver up +1.6% and +2.2% respectively for the week.  Oil fell -2.4% as geopolitical tension eased with the release of the British soliders by Iran.

So, how did the portfolios perform?

Fab 4:

What can I say – other than it was a great week for the Fab 4.  For the week, the portfolio was up 4%.  All members were significant contributors:  HBM.TO +5.4%, PCU +4.5%, PBR +3.3% and BHP +2.1%.

BBO:

I will simply repeat what  I said about the Fab 4.  It was a great week.  For the week, the BBO was up 5.2%.  I don’t know how long these performances can continue, but currently this is the right place at the right time.

The newest addition to the portfolio Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (CBI) started off with a bang.  In its first week on the team, it was up 6.6%.  CBI was awarded a couple new contracts and also received an upgrade by Goldman Sachs.  Welcome CBI!

Ludmin Mining (LMC) was up 20.8% as it announced that it was buying Nickel company Rio Narcea.  It is very rare when the acquiring company goes up on a merger announcement.  Apparently, Wall Street really likes the deal and so does the BBO!

Real Money:

Good news all around.  Read here for more details.

BRIC:

Even BRIC managed a good week up 3.6%.  However, It is still deeply in the red for the year.  I have been working on an alternative BRIC portfolio.  Read here for details.

Here are the rest of the regulars:
